About Hebburn Cemetery

Hebburn Cemetery opened in 1890, and covers an area of 16 acres.

Anyone can be buried here irrespective of where they live or their religious beliefs.

The cemetery lodge and chapel are Grade II listed buildings and the chapel is available to be used for funeral services.

Please note that there is no cemetery office on site.

Cars are permitted to drive through the cemetery, although we ask that drivers do not exceed the speed limit of 10 mph.

The cemetery is subject to a Public Spaces Protection Order relating to dog control. This means that dogs must be kept on a lead no longer than 1.5 metres at all times.

You must not allow a dog to foul without picking it up.

Council Officers have the power to issue a Fixed Penalty Notice for dog fouling and dog control offences.

The fine (or Fixed Penalty Notice) for these offences is £100, reduced to £50 if paid within 7 days.

Grass, shrubs, weeds and tree maintenance

The Council works with contractors to maintain the green spaces within the borough. For more information, see maintenance of our green spaces.

Family history and genealogy research

Copies of Hebburn Cemetery's burial records are held in the Local Studies Department of The Word.

The records are free to use.

They're in great demand so it's a good idea to make an appointment to use them.

You can contact the library on 0191 427 1818.

If you're unable to visit the library, we can conduct research for you. However, there is a charge for this service.

Contact us for more information or use the burial records search facility.
