Boost for Community Safety

Community safety in South Tyneside has been given a boost thanks to new cutting-edge CCTV technology.

 

Cameras at 10 locations across the borough are being upgraded from analogue to high-resolution digital devices.

The new smart technology will ensure compatibility with the wider CCTV network systems and provide superior image quality.

 

The £60k investment has been targeted at locations with higher levels of crime and anti-social behaviour, however, further upgrades are anticipated later this year.

 

Cllr Jim Foreman, Lead Member for Housing and Community Safety, said: "CCTV is a vital tool in helping our residents feel safe and secure.

 

"As well as acting as a deterrent and helping detect crime and anti-social behaviour, they can also help us monitor and manage events in real time and assist the emergency services.

 

"This state-of-the-art technology is replacing older, outdated cameras to provide better image quality and enhanced night-time vision.

 

 

"Creating strong communities, where people live in safe neighborhoods, is one of the council's five ambitions and tackling crime and anti-social behaviour is key to realising that."

 

The new equipment, which has been part funded from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, will be located predominantly in the borough's three town centres.

 

The technology upgrade will be delivered by has been supplied by integrated solutions provider, North.

 

Lewis Reid, Head of Operations at North, said: "We are delighted to be working with Â鶹ÊÓƵ to deliver a new state-of-the-art CCTV upgrade that will drive positive change throughout the area.

 

"Whilst CCTV is vital for preventing crime, implementing this new technology will enable the council to benefit from real-time data which will help to improve services and create safer communities."
