New facilities are currently being built at a South Tyneside school which will improve the lives of children with special educational needs.

Additional classrooms and a therapy centre are currently under construction at Bamburgh School in South Shields and are expected to be complete by spring time.

The new, detached building will house two classrooms as well as therapy rooms, toilets and a kitchen.

Councillor Joan Atkinson, Deputy Leader, said: "This development will result in enhanced facilities for the children of Bamburgh School whose special needs cover a range of medical, physical, social, emotional and learning difficulties.

"The new facilities will improve outcomes for pupils and will go some way towards helping us achieve our mission to give all our children the best start in life."

The development is being carried out by Metropolis Architecture Ltd on behalf of Â鶹ÊÓƵ.

Headteacher at the school Peter Nord said: "These specialist facilities will enhance teaching conditions for both our pupils and staff and ultimately will improve the education of our children.

"Much has been done in recent years to improve the outcomes for children with special educational needs in the Borough and this latest development will be a very welcome addition."
