Child and Maternal Health Profile

The latest update of the includes new data on topics such as hospital admissions, educational attainment and teenage mothers:

 

  • In 2022/23, the rate of A&E attendance for 0-4 year olds in South Tyneside was 1532.2 per 1000. This was significantly worse than the North East (1120.9) and England (797.3). The South Tyneside rate shows a statistically significant increase from the rate of 1437.7 the previous year.
  • In 2022/23, the average attainment 8 score for children aged 15-16 in South Tyneside was 44.2. This was 44.4 in the North East and 46.2 across England.
  • In 2022/23, the rate of hospital admissions for asthma for those under the age of 19 in South Tyneside was 142.8 per 100,000. This represents a trend which is decreasing and getting better based off the past 5 years. This was not significantly different to the North East (149.6) and England (122.2).
  • In 2022/23, the rate of teenage mothers in South Tyneside was 0.7%. This represents no significant change based on the last five years. This was not significantly different from the North East (1%) and England (0.6%).

Smoking Profile

The latest update of the (formerly Local Tobacco Control Profile) was released, which included new data for 10 new indicators. The data listed below is sourced from the Annual Population Survey (APS).

 

  • In 2022, the smoking prevalence in adults was 15.2% in South Tyneside. This was not significantly different to the North East (13.1%) and England (12.7%).
  • In 2022, the percentage of adults in South Tyneside who classified themselves as ex-smokers was 28.5%. This was not significantly different to the North East (27.7%) and England (25.2%).
  • In 2022, the percentage of adults who had never smoked was 56.3% in South Tyneside. This was not significantly different to the North East (59.3%) but was significantly worse than England (62.1%).

Access to sports facilities

In March 2024, the ONS released a study showing the . The results showed:

  • There are 15.2 sports facilities per 10,000 people in South Tyneside. If you exclude grass pitches, this rate drops to 9.27 per 10,000. This is still higher than the North East average, which was 8.90 per 10,000.
  • Within South Tyneside, Boldon Colliery had the highest rate, with 36.3 facilities per 10,000. Cleadon Park and Hebburn were the lowest, both with 3.3 per 10,000.
