Obesity profile
The latest update of the includes new data for five indicators. This includes:
- In 2022 / 23, the prevalence of obesity in adults in South Tyneside was at 38.8%. This was significantly worse than the North East (32.2%) and England (26.2%).
- In 2022 / 23, the percentage of adults (16+) in South Tyneside meeting the '5 a day' fruit and vegetable consumption recommendations was 26.8%. This was not significantly different to the North East (28.6) but was significantly worse than England (31%).
- In 2022 / 23, the percentage of physically active adults in South Tyneside was 60.7%. This was a similar percentage to the North East (63.2) but was significantly worse than England (67.1).
Child and maternal health profile
The latest update of the includes new data for eleven indicators, this includes:
- In 2022 / 23, the rate of hospital admissions for asthma in under 19s was 142.8 per 100,000. This represents a statistically significant trend which is decreasing and getting better based on the last five years. This was not significantly different to the North East (149.6) and England (122.2).
- In 2022 / 23, the rate of hospital admissions for mental health conditions in under 18 in South Tyneside was 83.5 per 100,000. This was not significantly different to the rates for the North East (98.8) and England (80.8).
- In 2022 / 23, the rate of hospital admissions for self-harm in 10 to 24 year olds in South Tyneside was 357.6 per 100,000. This represents a statistically significant trend which is decreasing and getting better based on the last five years. This was similar to the North East (461.2) and England (319).
- In 2022, the under 18 births rate in South Tyneside was 5.9 per 1000. Based off the last five years this trend had shown no significant change. The local rate was not significantly different to the North East (6.2) and England (3.4).
Alcohol profile
The latest update of the includes new data for 13 indicators. This includes:
- In 2022 / 23, the rate of admission episodes for alcohol-related (narrow) in South Tyneside was 777 per 100,000. This represented no significant change based on the last five years. The local rate was significantly worse than the North East (702) and England (475) rates.
- Between 2020 / 21 and 2022 / 23, the rate of alcohol specific admissions for under 18s in South Tyneside was 61.7 per 100,000. This was not significantly different to the North East rate (48.7) but was significantly worse than England (26).
- In 2022 / 23, the rate of admission episodes for alcoholic liver disease (broad) in South Tyneside ws 304.2 per 100,000. This represented no significant change based on the last five years. The local rate was significantly worse than the North East (236.3) and England (155.6).
Suicide prevention profile
The latest update of the includes:
- From 2018 to 2022, the age standardised rate of suicide for the ages 25 to 44 years in South Tyneside was 11.7 per 100,000. This was not significantly different to the North East (18.9) or England (12.3).
- From 2018 to 2022, the age standardised rate of suicide for the ages 45 to 64 years in South Tyneside was 11.0 per 100,000. This was not significantly different to the North East (15.3) and England (13.3).
