Memorial Bench Donated to South Tyneside
A memorial bench has been donated to South Tyneside to remember the country's war heroes.
The Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Ann Clouston, donated the bench which now sits proudly on Harton Quays park.
The back of the bench has silhouettes of red and black metal poppies, doves as a symbol of peace and features the motto 'Lest We Forget'. The bench is not dated as the design is relevant for both soldiers serving and those who have fallen in today's world.
Councillor Ed Malcolm, Chair of South Tyneside Armed Forces Forum, said: "This new memorial bench is a poignant tribute to the men and women that make up the military community and the sacrifices they make to serve our country and keep us all safe.
"It is a place where members of the public can sit, reflect and pay their respects to the fallen heroes of our Borough and those still serving.
"I would like to thank Colonel Ann Clouston for donating this commemorative bench, providing the people of South Tyneside a place to give thought to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in all conflicts."
The location of the bench was decided together by Â鶹ÊÓƵ and the Deputy Lord Lieutenant herself at the end of last summer, but its installation was delayed due to COVID-19.
Colonel Ann Clouston, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, said: "This seat is a space for reflection and to take some time to think of those whom we have lost or miss.
"In these difficult times, we should also remember those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Its situation, at Harton Quays, between the Redhead Memorial and the Merchant navy memorial is a fitting place with great views over the river."
