Overview
The police are your first point of contact when reporting any crime. Some crimes are classed as emergencies and therefore need more urgent attention than other crimes.
There are a few ways you can contact the police, depending on what you're reporting.
Contacting the police
If somebody's life is in danger or a crime is taking place, call 999.
To report all other crimes or incidents, or for general information and advice, phone 101 or text 07786 200 814.
For people who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired:
- In an emergency, text to 999
- In a non-emergency, text to 07786 200 815
- In a non-emergency, textphone 18001 101
Report crime online
If you are the victim or have witnessed any non-emergency incident occurring within the Northumbria Police area you can use the internet to report non-urgent, less serious crimes.
This system can be used to report details of the following offences:
- Burglary (non-dwelling)
- Theft
- Criminal damage
- Making off without payment
- Theft from or damage to motor vehicles.
Crimestoppers
Crimestoppers is an independent UK-wide charity working to stop crime.
If you have information about any crime and would prefer to offer it anonymously, you can call Crimestoppers for free on 0800 555 111 or report it on report it on their website:
Victims First
Victims First Northumbria is an independent victim referral service. They put victims at the heart of their service ensuring they are given help and support to cope and recover from the difficult experience they have faced.
They understand the different needs required by people using the service, for example:
- some may have suffered deep psychological or emotional trauma
- some may be vulnerable or suffer from a particular disability
- people from particular ethnic groups may need culturally sympathetic support
- people of different ages will have different needs to each other
- some cases are more complex than others
Whoever the victim, and whatever the crime, Victims First will always put them first and give the best possible support, care and advice.
