Overview

There are opportunities available at South Tyneside Youth Justice Service for volunteers to help guide young people and make a real difference in that person's life.

Volunteers come from all backgrounds, and each brings their own skills and experience.

They will help play a crucial role in preventing re-offending and safeguarding young people.

Becoming a volunteer can be a rewarding and challenging experience. As well as making a difference in someone's life, it's also a great way to meet people, build confidence and gain new skills.

We offer excellent training and supervision in a variety of rewarding roles.

Referral order panels

When a young person is given a Referral Order, they have to attend a youth offender panel, which consists of:

  • two volunteers from the local community
  • a panel adviser from the Youth Justice Service

What the panel does

The panel will:

  • meet with the young person, their parents / carers and the victim (where appropriate)
  • agree how the young person can repair the harm caused, and
  • agree a tailor made contract lasting between three and 12 months aimed at reducing the risk of further offending, as well as addressing the causes of the offending behaviour

Panel members need to be over 18 years old and have experience working with young people.

Volunteers are expected to give a commitment of at least 2 hours a month.

Panel meetings can be arranged around your existing work and other commitments.

You will receive specific training and on-going support.
